Forts in Raigad District
Raigad Fort:
Raigad Fort is located in the Sahyadri mountain range, about 25 km from Mahad in Raigad district. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj renovated this fort and declared it the capital of the Maratha Empire in 1674 AD. There is a ropeway facility to reach the fort, so you can reach the fort in a few minutes.
There is a man-made lake near Raigad Fort, which is called “Gangasagar Lake”. The only way to reach the fort is through the “Maha-Darwaja”. There is a replica of the throne in the palace of the state, which is facing the Nagarkhana Darwaja. The area near the throne has been designed in such a way that the words spoken from the door of the palace can be easily heard up to the throne. There is a famous tower built on a high valley near Raigad Fort, which is called “Hirkani Buruj”.
Murud-Janjira Fort:
Murud-Janjira Fort is a water fort located near the city of Murud on the Arabian Sea. Boats are available from Rajapuri Port to reach the fort. The main gate of the fort faces the Rajapuri coast and the other gate faces the open Arabian Sea. There is a gate facing the sea on the west side and is called ‘Daria Darwaza’. Many cannons of European and indigenous manufacture can be seen on the bastions of the fort. The fort, which is currently in a dilapidated state, had all kinds of facilities like a palace, rooms for courtiers, a mosque, two small freshwater ponds, etc. in ancient times. The palace for the Nawab of Janjira is still in good condition.
The three giant cannons located on the Murud-Janjira Fort – ‘Kalalbangadi’, ‘Chawari’, ‘Landa Kasam’ are the main attractions of the fort. It is said that these guns were known for their long-range fire in the past.
Colaba Fort:
Colaba Fort was a very important sea fort of the Maratha Empire. This fort is located on the west coast near the city of Alibaug in the sea. The fort has two gates, one facing the sea and the other facing Alibaug. Although this fort is a water fort, the special feature of the fort is the fresh water wells located on the fort. In 1713 AD, according to the treaty signed with Balaji Vishwanath, Colaba Fort along with other forts was handed over to Kanhoji Angre. Kanhoji Angre used this fort to launch many attacks on British ships.
Sudhagad Fort:
Sudhagad (Bhorpagad) Fort is a spectacular fort located in the Sahyadri mountain range. This fort is about 50 km west of Pune, about 25 km south of Lonavala and 10 km east of Pali in Raigad district. Sudhagad Fort is also known as Bhorapgad. Shivaji Maharaj changed the name of Bhorapgad to Sudhagad Fort. Thanale and Khandsable caves exist in the Sudhagad area.
The Sudhagad plateau is divided into three parts. The first part is the western plateau in front of the fort. A large number of remains of buildings are visible in this area because the land is flat and there is a lake and a large tank here. The second part is the temple of Bhorai Devi and the area up to Takmak Tok. There are remains of four large barns here. The third part is the eastern area. There is a large bastion here and some remains are found in the overgrown forest.

By Train
The nearest railway stations for all tourist destinations are Mumbai (CST), LTT, Kurla Terminus, Pune Railway Station and Panvel Railway Station (in Raigad district) on the main lines of Indian Railways. The nearest railway stations of Konkan Railway in Raigad district are Pen, Roha, Veer etc. Panvel Junction is the most important railway station in the district. It is connected to Mumbai (Harbour Line and Central Railway Main Line), Thane (Trans Harbour Line), Roha, Vasai (Western Railway). There is a “narrow gauge” railway line from Neral to Matheran, called the Matheran Hill Railway.
By Road
All the major cities and tourist destinations in Raigad district are connected by road via Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) buses. Raigad district is connected to Mumbai by the Sion-Panvel Expressway. The Mumbai-Pune Expressway and National Highway 4 pass through Panvel, Khalapur and Khopoli. National Highway 17, which starts at Panvel, passes through the entire district via Poladpur.
